The H. B. Shiner Home constructed in 1860

The H.B. Shiner Home, built in 1860 by John H. Harris is a two story Empire style Ranch house (click photos to enlarge). The home fondly named "The Greenwood Plantation", was built with tide-water cypress brought from Indianola by ox cart. In 1875 Henry B. Shiner purchased the home and 1,000 acre ranch for he and his wife, Miss Lou West, daughter of prominent rancher George West, and their five children. Mr. Shiner later added 8,000 acres to his land holdings. As immigration from other countries began, Mr. Shiner's land agents were busy. Then came Captain Charles Welhausen, Civil War veteran, who purchased the home and 1,000 acre ranch in 1884. The Shiners remained in the home until 1890. Captain Welhausen and his family lived in the home until 1895. Then the family moved to town to continue their development of the mercantile and banking interests. To date, land remains in the family, and is known as Welhausen Land and Cattle Co.

The single story portion of the home seen in the background of the Texas historical marker was added in the late 1930's to early 1940's. This housed the new indoor kitchen, indoor bath, and dining room.
