 Flag
 Project
                        Picture 1 - These flags are replicas of the original flags that once lined the streets of Shiner. An original
          flag and pole was found in the attic of an old building, once a commercial business, and used as the guide for the
          reproductions. The concrete sidewalks were constructed with brass insertions placed in the concrete to make the
          holder for the flag. Today, the flags are still flown in the original receptacles. Picture 2 - Some businesses wished to
          honor our country with the American flag and also honor the state of Texas and the many Texans we have fighting
          for our country. Picture 3 - Businesses on 7th Street, the other Main Street in Shiner, proudly fly their flags in the
          original receptacles also. Picture 4 - Flags line both sides of Ave. E; Avenue E is Main Street in Shiner. Picture 1
          was taken from the opposite side of Ave. E. Picture 5 - When building a new community it was common to focus
          on a main street and near the railroad. As the town grew, new businesses had to locate a block off of Main Street.
          This business located a half block from Main Street had no sidewalk receptacle for a flag. The owner wishing to
          participate in this project found another way to fly the flag; the flag is flying proudly. Picture 6 - This photo was made
          from a postcard of the "4th of July Parade" of 1916 in downtown Shiner. In the back left of the photo is First National Bank;
          one can faintly see the American flags flying on the porch entry.

                        planter boxes, Texas icons, and personalized brick pavers to the downtown area at 7th Street.
                        The bricks commemorate, honor and memorialize persons or events in the history of Shiner.

 Project
In keeping with Shiner's tradition of landscaping with beautiful crepe myrtles, the Crepe Myrtle Project emerged in 1999. The project, designed to benefit the businesses and residents of Shiner, gave away over 600 "watermelon red" crepe myrtles.    Top ^
